Heroics

Six or seven years ago, there was a video game called Final Fantasy IX. Perhaps you've heard of it? Anyways, it's an rpg. You level up your characters, and as you progress in the game you unlock more abilities. Some abilities include getting money when you attack, auto-healing when getting hit, extra damage, etc. (Don't roll your eyes, girls, I'm getting to the point.)

One of the characters had something called "Protect Girls", and when enabled... he would jump in front of any female character in your party and take the hit. This was done regardless of the amount of hp that he had. So even if the girl had full hp, and he would die if hit once more, he would still automatically jump in front and take the blow to his demise.

It is funny. For a long time, I lived life with that ability enabled. Classic nice guy-ism. I have learned to stop doing it indiscriminately, but time and time again I still find myself trying to protect the girls around me. God is gracious though. I find that in more and more situations, it is impossible for me to protect them.

So what is there to do? I learn to stop relying on my strength to protect, and learn to trust in God. He is a shield and fortress. Those who put their trust in Him are well protected, indeed.
